It’s the most popular programming language in the world by far and the most in-demand language for backend web development. Furthermore, it’s very similar to C#, the second most in-demand backend language. If you know one, you can easily switch over to the other, which means that your skills are relevant for the majority of backend development jobs. Java is an old school OOP language that’s verbose, but also robust.
Backend languages I don’t think you should learn in 2017:
PHP: A horrible language that got an undeserved surge in popularity after Facebook was developed in it. It’s on the decline now.
